Can I Shave Between Laser Hair Removal Sessions?

Laser Hair Removal Treatment in Goa

By Dr. Diksha Pednekar, Aesthetic DNA, Panjim, Goa

Short answer: yes, you can, and you should. Shaving is the safest way to handle hair growth between laser hair removal sessions. Waxing, threading and plucking are the ones to avoid, because they pull the hair out from the root, and the laser needs that root to do its work.

I am Dr. Diksha Pednekar, and at Aesthetic DNA in Panjim, Goa, this is one of the questions patients ask me most often, usually in the first session. Let me explain it in simple words, so you know what to do at home and why.

Why shaving is fine but waxing is not

Laser hair removal works by targeting the dark pigment (melanin) in your hair. The light travels down the hair shaft to the follicle, the tiny pocket under the skin where the hair grows, and gently damages it so it grows back finer and slower, and eventually often stops.

For this to work, the hair has to be in place, at least the part below the skin. Shaving cuts the hair at the surface, but the root stays put inside the follicle. So the laser still has something to aim at. Waxing, threading, epilating and plucking remove the whole hair including the root. Then the laser has nothing to target, and that session is largely wasted.

In fact, we ask you to shave before your session too, and I will come to that below.

How laser hair removal works, in plain words

Hair does not all grow at the same time. At any moment, some of your hairs are actively growing, some are resting, and some are about to shed. The laser works best on hairs in the active growth phase, when they are firmly attached to the follicle and full of pigment.

That is why one session is never enough. Each time, we catch the hairs that are in the right phase. The rest get treated in the next rounds. Most people need around six to eight sessions, spaced about four to eight weeks apart. The exact number depends on the body area, hair thickness, hormones and your skin. During your consultation at our Panjim clinic, I will tell you what to expect for your own case.

What you will notice after a session

Many patients get worried in the first two weeks. Some hairs seem to be growing again, and it looks like nothing worked. Please do not panic. What you are seeing is usually shedding. The treated hairs are pushed out slowly over one to three weeks, a bit like tiny black stubble that falls away on its own.

Here is a simple rule for that period: let it fall naturally. Do not pick at it or pull it out. You can gently exfoliate or wash the area to help the hairs come off, once any redness has settled.

The right way to shave between sessions

  1. Wait for the skin to calm down. If the area is red, tender or warm after your session, give it a day or two before using a razor.
  2. Use a clean, sharp razor. A blunt blade tugs at the skin and causes cuts and irritation. Change it often, or use a fresh disposable one.
  3. Use a gentle shaving gel or cream. Never dry shave. Skip products with strong fragrance or alcohol.
  4. Shave in the direction of hair growth. It is kinder to the skin, especially on the legs, underarms and bikini line.
  5. Moisturise afterwards. A simple, fragrance-free moisturiser is enough.
  6. Do not shave over broken skin. If there is a cut, a rash or an active pimple, leave that spot alone.
  7. Shave 12 to 24 hours before your next appointment. The skin has time to settle, and the laser energy goes into the follicle instead of being wasted on the hair above the skin.

An electric trimmer or shaver is also fine if you have very sensitive skin. And please do not arrive with long, unshaved hair. It can cause discomfort and even surface burns, because the laser heats the hair above the skin as well.

What to avoid between sessions

  • Waxing, threading, plucking and epilating. These pull out the root. Please avoid them for the whole course of treatment.
  • Hair removal creams. Many doctors, including me, prefer that you skip them, as they can irritate skin that is already sensitised.
  • Direct sun and tanning. A tanned skin has more melanin, and the laser can then mistake your skin for hair. This raises the risk of burns and dark patches.
  • Scrubbing, hot showers and saunas right after a session. Give the skin a day or two.
  • Strong acids or retinol on the treated area, unless I have said it is fine.

A special note for Goa: sun, sweat and monsoon

Living in Goa means strong sun most of the year, high humidity, and long beach days. All three matter for laser treatment.

  • Sun: use a broad-spectrum sunscreen (SPF 30 or above) on treated areas and cover up on the beach. A fresh tan is one of the most common reasons we have to postpone a session.
  • Sweat and humidity: they can make freshly shaved skin more prone to irritation and small bumps. Wear loose cotton clothes and shower after heavy sweating.
  • Monsoon: damp, warm weather can lead to folliculitis (small, sore, pimple-like bumps around hair follicles), so keep the area clean and dry. It is actually a good season to start treatment, because you spend less time in the sun.

If you are visiting Goa for a few weeks and want to begin treatment, please talk to us first. Laser hair removal needs several sessions over months, so a proper plan matters.

Is it safe for Indian skin?

Yes, when the right laser and settings are chosen by a trained doctor. Indian skin usually has more melanin, so the settings need more care than they would for very fair skin. This is exactly why a medical assessment matters, and why I look at your skin type, tan level and hair before we begin. If someone promises the same result for every person without checking your skin, be careful.

When to call the clinic

Some redness and mild tenderness are normal. Please contact us if you notice:

  • Blisters, crusting or burning that does not settle in a day or two
  • Skin that looks unusually dark or unusually pale in the treated area
  • Painful pus-filled bumps or swelling
  • Any reaction that worries you

Frequently asked questions

Can I shave the day before my laser session?

Yes, and it is usually recommended. Shaving 12 to 24 hours before helps the laser reach the follicle better and reduces surface burns.

Can I wax after laser hair removal?

It is best not to, at least until your full course is done. Waxing removes the root, and the next session will not work as well.

Will shaving make my hair grow back thicker?

No. This is a common myth. Shaving does not change the thickness, colour or speed of hair growth. It only feels coarse because the cut tip is blunt.

Is laser hair removal permanent?

It gives long-term hair reduction. Many people see hair become much finer and sparser, and some areas stay smooth for years. Occasional top-ups may be needed because of hormones and natural changes.

Does laser hair removal hurt?

Most people describe it as a quick snap, like a rubber band on the skin. Cooling and modern devices keep it comfortable, and the discomfort passes quickly.

How many sessions will I need?

Usually six to eight, depending on the area, hair type and skin. I will give you a clearer estimate after examining you.

Final words

Between laser sessions, keep it simple: shave, do not wax; protect your skin from the sun; and be patient. Laser hair removal is a course, not a one-time fix, and small habits at home make a big difference to your results.
